Yellow, cyan, magenta and black they are all green

When a printer tells you your job is going to be printed “full colour” it usually means that they will use a combination of cyan, yellow, magenta and black to produce all the colours, shades and hues found on your printed piece. With those 4 colours we can create pretty much any picture you can imagine. One notable exception to that is metallic colours which are tough to produce using CMYK.
We have switched to using vegetable based inks for our larger runs. Current technology has created beautiful inks that are bright and vibrant and they are also absolutely environmentally friendly since they are renewable, biodegradable and 100% recyclable.
Do you have a project that you’d like to get printed with the greenest process possible?

What is ink?

Ink is a substance, liquid or paste that contains pigments or dyes. Ink is mostly  used to colour a surface to produce an image. The image is sometimes text, pictures or a complex design. Thicker inks, in paste form, are used extensively in offset and lithographic printing.

Ink is also used for drawing or writing. This sort of ink is usually thinner.

The components of inks serve many purposes; the ink’s carrier, colorants, and other additives affect the flow and thickness of the ink and its appearance when dry. From glossy to matte finishes and also the penetration it has into the paper material.

In the next weeks we will explore the common uses of ink as well as the more interesting ones.
